What if your car was your home? For Cindy, that was her reality.
Cindy had been living in "DeVan," a 2007 Kia Sedona, for nearly a year when she first visited The Lift Garage. Like many cars we see, the inspection revealed that DeVan needed significant work – so much work that we had to keep it for two days to complete everything.
Thankfully, because of your support, we could offer Cindy a safe place to stay through our Lodging Program, designed specifically for unhoused customers whose cars are being repaired.
Your support offered more than a fix – it provided peace of mind and a place to rest while we got her car back in working condition.
Over the years, Cindy became a familiar face at The Lift Garage, often returning to our shop for Friday Express Services. During these visits, we’d check fluids, replace bulbs, and take care of other small maintenance needs to help keep DeVan in safe working order.
One of our most heartwarming moments came during an Express Services visit, when Cindy surprised us with a thank-you card. In it, Cindy shared that she had finally secured low-income housing.
No longer was DeVan her shelter; it had transformed into a tool for reaching her job and securing a new home. This moment was made possible by your support.
About two and a half years later, in February 2024, Cindy’s car faced another round of significant repairs. This time, we had to break the difficult news: it was time to retire DeVan. The costs were more than the car was worth, and recurring safety issues were no doubt going to keep popping up. But, thanks to the stability your support helped Cindy achieve, she built a small emergency fund and was able to look for a new, used vehicle.
When she began her search, she turned to us once again for guidance and honest advice. Cindy brought four different vehicles to The Lift Garage for our pre-purchase inspection program. With each car, we performed a comprehensive inspection and offered her honest advice, ensuring she had all the information needed to make a smart choice that fit her budget.
Cindy found the perfect match – a reliable, affordable car that met all her needs. As she drove away in her new to her car, we were reminded of the incredible impact our community fosters when we come together for those who need it most.
